Mello is one of the main antagonists in the manga and anime series Death Note. He is an orphan and acts as the older L’s two potential successors raised in Wammy’s House. Mello’s dream is to be No.1, so he hates all the people who pass him, of course include Near. Among all the excellent people in the orphanage, Near ranks the first, while Mello ranks the second. Near is more intelligent than Mello, but Mello has more ambition than Near. Therefore, when it decided that Mello should work with the other successor, Near, Mello refuses, citing an inability to work with Near, to whom he is considered second in ability. Meanwhile, Mello has a brazen and driven personality, driving him to be the first to resume actively hunting Kira; however, Mello lets him emotions cloud his judgment, often leading to rash decisions that impede his progress.
Mello is certainly a genius and more intelligent than most people, but he can work well with Near. When the president asks him to success L’s with Near, he leaves and then acts alone. In the section two, Near admits that he and Mello alone can never pass L, only when they pool their efforts together, however, they never do like this. Maybe Mello is too emulative, he describes his goal in his own words, “I will be the new number one”.
Similar to L’s fondness for sweets, Mello is near-constantly seen eating bars of chocolate, usually by ripping off an entire chunk in his mouth with a dramatic flourish. Also, just like L, Mello thinks and reacts quickly, and uses less conventional methods to solve his cases.
